The following is a rubric used for holistic grading of a newspaper report in Spanish. As you will find out, there are several rubrics that I use, all California State approved.

Rubric for Newspaper Report.

5 Exceeds Expectations

4 – 3 Meets expectations

2   Partially acceptable

1  - 0  Below proficient

Pronunciation

Consistent.

Excellent fluency.

Intonation and

Pronunciation excellent.

Usually good fluency.

Few hesitations.

Slow.

Choppy.

Hesitated.

English interference.

Difficult to understand.

Lengthy pauses.

Unintelligible.

Vocabulary

Appropriate for student’s level. Not over his/her head. Had even supplemental vocabulary knowledge.

Vocabulary was semi-appropriate.  More searching could have been done at his/her level.

Low vocabulary skills. Had to ask how to say something in the target language. Hadn’t looked up word ahead of time.

Totally over student’s head. Should have done a much more intensive research. Most likely chose anything to just have something to hand in.

Preparation

Excellent. Obviously put time and effort into this project. Related with extreme confidence.

Good. Could have put slightly more time into this project. Relating with decent confidence.

Mediocre. Obviously didn’t do too much research on the matter.

Poor. Seems like it was quickly done. Seems like anything was chosen without forethought.

Article Knowledge

Excellent Comprehension of what he/she read. Answered class' questions with the utmost knowledge.

Decent, but should have reread one or more times to have a stronger hold on the subject. Semi “winging it.” Was stumped by class' question(s).

Seemed like article was skimmed over without really absorbing what it was about. Definitely attempted to “wing it.”

Minimal knowledge. Seems like it was winged by the title.

Followed instructions

Used appropriate newspaper article. Had handed in prior a summary to Señor/Monsieur. Raya.

Had only one component.

Needed to printout. Had an excuse for not having a copy. Also had a color article and an excuse why it was in color.

No article to hand in.
