I teach students the 3 B's. To be:

Bilingual         Bicultural         Biliterate

As you know, the World Language Department here at Lowell follows the California state Framework. Students are expected to learn to communicate in the target language by using the four basic skills: 1. listening 2. speaking 3. reading 4. writing.

I employ a variety of teaching methods as well as classroom organization models to attain this goal. Students will be expected to communicate in diverse ways in the target language rather than merely showing knowledge about the language. Students learn and practice receiving, formulating and sending real oral messages in the target language. The purpose of world language study is to prepare students in such a way as to make them both linguistically competent and culturally aware, and to enable them to experience personal fulfillment that comes through developing these skills.

MY BACKGROUND

1. I have been teaching for 32 years. This is year number 33.

2. I have an MA in Educational Administration and Supervision of Instruction, an MA in ESL/Spanish Bilingual Education, and an MFA in Creative Writing.

3. The first time I came to Lowell was in 1992 from John O'Connell HS.

4. I was a teacher for 8 years in New Jersey before moving to California in 1986. I have taught French, Spanish, Italian, and ESL.

5. I have lived (meaning that I've spent at least 3 months) in the following places: Paris, France; Perugia, Italy; London, England; Madrid, Spain; Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Why study World Languages?

With the 250 million in the United States, 30 % speak a second language. That's mucho, beaucoup, molto! Plus, knowing another language can help you advance more quickly in a job as well as being more marketable.
